Child Therapy Related Questions
Can parents be involved in their child’s therapy sessions?
Yes, absolutely. Parent Involvement makes child therapy more effective. However, parents do not need to be present during the child therapy session. Children need to feel that these sessions are private and confidential. Your therapist will use their expertise and discretion to determine how involved the parents should be in their child’s therapy. Child therapy is most effective when parents and the therapist work together and collaborate.
At Toronto Family Therapy & Mediation we strive to ensure parents can be part of the therapeutic process, while ensuring and protecting child confidentiality. As part of our child therapy process we always start with a 1hr parent session with the child therapist, so the parent(s) can provide their perspective and observations regarding the child, the home and family dynamic, prior to meeting with the child. In the case of separated families, we encourage participation from both parents and offer the initial parent session as either individual parent sessions or a joint parent session, depending on the family relationship.
Can parents and children participate together in sessions?
This can be suggested by the therapist for the parents to participate in some sessions.
It is helpful for the therapists to see how the child interacts with their parent and get a picture of the family dynamic.
What is a Parent Intake?
We always meet with parents prior to seeing a child. This allows the parents to provide background information about their child, share any concerns or challenges their child is having, learn about the therapist’s approach to child therapy, establish the therapeutic goals and create a plan for therapy.
Is there a fee for a Parent Intake?
Yes, the parent intake session is where the child therapy begins.
Parent intake sessions are usually 1 hr in length and allow for the parent(s) to provide the initial background and observations of the child, family dynamic, and the reasons bringing the child(ren) to therapy. The initial parent session is also where we start to set individual treatment goals and objective based on the parents’ insight.
The parent intake session will be charged accordingly based on the time of the session.
If we are separated/divorced, do both parents participate in the parent intake at the same time or separately?’
